If the problem is biological and internal, the solution must also be something you buy and consume. The myth and the market reinforce each other neatly.
It's worth noting that none of this means the people experiencing these changes are imagining them or being lazy. The shifts are real. The frustration is legitimate. The explanation is just off.
What Actually Helps
If muscle loss is a primary driver of the calorie-burning slowdown that does occur, the most evidence-backed response is resistance training. Lifting weights — or any form of exercise that builds and maintains muscle — directly addresses the mechanism that actually changes with age. Cardio has its own benefits, but it doesn't replace muscle the way strength training does.
Sleep is a less glamorous but equally important factor. Poor sleep disrupts hunger hormones in ways that increase appetite and preference for calorie-dense foods. It also reduces the energy available for physical activity, creating a cycle that's easy to underestimate.
And paying attention to the slow drift of daily movement — not just formal exercise, but how much you're simply walking, standing, and being active across the day — matters more than most people realize.
